Hollywood studios largely missing in Cannes 2026 lineup

he Cannes Film Festival unveiled its roster for this year's edition on Thursday, but one noticeable absence stood out: major Hollywood studios.
As per reports, American A-listers appear set to be less prominent at the 79th edition, a shift from recent years. Still, actors Woody Harrelson and Kristen Stewart will star in Full Phil by French director Quentin Dupieux. "The United States will be represented. The (Hollywood) studios a bit less," said festival director Thierry Fremaux.
There will be some Hollywood presence, however. Actor John Travolta is set to bring star power as he presents his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which follows a young boy's journey in the 'golden age of aviation'.
Fremaux unveiled 21 films competing for the Palme d'Or, featuring a mix of past winners, newcomers, and strong entries from Spain and Japan. Among the frontrunners are Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda with the AI-themed Sheep in the Box, Romania's Cristian Mungiu with Fjord, and Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, whose Minotaur centres on wealthy Russians confronted with conscription.
Speaking about the May 12-23 festival lineup, Fremaux said many Western films lean towards escapism amid current global tensions, with a focus on "gentleness, songs, nature", while others are "bringing history into the present".
Some industry insiders suggest Hollywood studios may be moving away from European festivals as launch platforms, opting instead for social media-driven premieres that are seen as less risky. HTC...
