From sapphires to diamonds: The Louvre's priceless loss
India, Oct. 22 -- The Louvre in Paris went into lockdown Sunday after thieves pulled off an eight-minute heist in broad daylight, escaping on scooters with eight of France's crown-jewel treasures. Among the stolen items are a sapphire diadem, necklace, and single earring worn by queens, featuring 24 Ceylon sapphires and 1,083 diamonds. Also taken were Napoleon's emerald necklace and earrings, gifted to his second wife, Marie-Louise, in 1810, adorned with 32 emeralds and 1,138 diamonds. Empress Eugenie's diamond-encrusted reliquary brooch, pearl diadem, and diamond bow brooch were also stolen. The Louvre remains closed as police continue their investigation. President of France, Emmanuel Macron described the theft as "an attack on a heritage we cherish" and vowed to recover the stolen works. But experts fear the jewels may already be "long gone," possibly broken into hundreds of pieces....
