Flooded Bengaluru bookstore loses thousands of books after heavy rain

eavy rain in Bengaluru on Wednesday left widespread damage across the city, including at the much-loved independent bookstore The Bookworm.
The Church Street store shared images of the aftermath on Instagram on April 29, which have since been widely circulated. Various members of the literary community, like author Aanchal Malhotra, caricaturist Rachita Taneja, as well as many bookstagrammers, have shown their support for the bookstore.
In the pictures, books were seen floating in murky water, shelves were soaked, and floors were submerged. "Due to heavy rain in Bangalore, we lost 4000 to 5000 books," the store said in a post. Many users offered support and suggested ways to help the bookstore recover, including buying damaged books.
Some also pointed to a similar initiative in Kolkata, where flooded bookstores on College Street once organised a 'wet book fair' to sell water-damaged titles at discounted prices and recover losses.
The Bookworm is now trying to salvage what it can by drying partially damaged books in the sun before putting them up for sale at reduced prices. In an update shared on April 30, the team said the response had been "truly overwhelming" and expressed gratitude for the continued encouragement as they work to restore the space.
