Dave on Freese's exit from Foo Fighters after 2 years
India, Feb. 24 -- Nearly two years after musician Taylor Hawkins' death in March 2022, rock band Foo Fighters (founded in 1994) saw some big changes. In May, 2023 Josh Freese stepped in to help the band return to the stage. It was later in May 2025, the drummer revealed on Instagram that he is no longer a part of Foo Fighters, and they had "decided to go in a different direction," adding that no explanation was offered to him on this.
Now, in an interview with Zane Lowe, frontman Dave Grohl has reflected on the emotional complexity behind the decision, saying how continuing without Hawkins was "really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to, like, fill his shoes." Drawing from his own past, he noted how rock band Nirvana went through several drummers before he became their fifth, while Foo Fighters have had only four - with Hawkins holding the stool for 25 of their 30 years.
He praised Freese, calling him "a consummate professional, recalling his long resume with artists from Michael Buble to The Offspring."
While they had a blast during their year and a half on the road, before taking a pause, Grohl, said, that the group discussed their future plans before making the decision of going ahead with a different drummer.
