Confused between retinol, retinal and tretinoin? Dermatologist breaks down their benefits
India, June 18 -- T he chemical compounds retinol, retinal, and tretinoin are among the most popular skincare ingredients for treating acne and signs of ageing. While they may seem similar, each works differently and offers unique benefits. Dermatologist Dr Noopur Jain explains the key differences to help you choose the right one.
As per the dermatologist, retinol is the mildest and most widely available retinoid. However, it must undergo several conversion steps to become retinoic acid, which is the active form used by skin cells.
As a result, retinol takes longer to deliver visible results. It is often recommended for beginners, younger individuals, and those with sensitive skin.
Retinal is one step closer to retinoic acid and requires only a single conversion to become active. This makes it more potent and effective than retinol while remaining relatively well tolerated.
Dr Noopur says retinal can be a good option for those seeking faster results for acne, pigmentation, or early signs of ageing without the higher risk of irritation associated with prescription retinoids.
Tretinoin is pure retinoic acid and is available by prescription. Since it is already in its active form, it delivers some of the most effective and well-researched results for acne, photoageing, and pigmentation. However, it can also cause dryness, peeling, redness, and irritation, particularly during the initial weeks of use.
According to Dr Noopur, the right choice depends on your skin type, concerns, and tolerance. Retinol is generally best suited for beginners and people with sensitive skin, while retinal offers a balance between effectiveness and tolerability. For more severe acne or advanced signs of ageing, tretinoin may provide the best results when used under a dermatologist's supervision.
Ultimately, she advises choosing a retinoid that your skin can tolerate and use consistently over the long term....
