30-ft cockroach effigy to burn alongside Ravana at a Delhi Ramlila
India, Oct. 17 -- Dussehra festivities in Delhi's Pitampura will see an unusual twist this year. Alongside the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad, a 30-foot-tall cockroach effigy will be set ablaze for the traditional burning of effigies, signifying the triumph of good over evil. Organisers say the unusual addition is a bid to draw attention towards cleanliness and sanitation.
"The idea is to highlight the need to rid houses, societies, and neighbourhoods of dirt and unhygienic conditions," says Ashok Goel Devaraha, president of Shree Keshav Ram Leela Committee, which organises this annual event at DDA Ground in Pitampura.
Devahara shares that the initiative aligns with the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi campaigns. He says, "Cockroach is seen as a symbol of filth, and the effigy we are getting made signifies the importance of cleanliness and the message of victory of good over evil. So the cockroach would be portrayed as part of Ravana's army, alongside the asuras that are traditionally associated with the demon king."
Amid the recent demonstrations across India, the committee's decision to burn a cockroach effigy has been trending on social media. However, organisers steer clear of any link to the protests, maintaining that it is "not political"....
