'No connection between betting and gaming apps'
India, Aug. 8 -- Vijay Deverakonda addressed the media following his appearance before the ED (Enforcement Directorate) in Hyderabad's Basheerbagh on Wednesday. The actor was questioned for over four-and-a-half hours over his alleged promotion of illegal betting apps.
Clarifying his role and denying any link to betting platforms, the 36-year-old said in Telugu, "I'm unaware of how my name came up, but since the officers have to do due diligence, they summoned me for clarification. In India, there are two different categories - betting apps and gaming apps."
Vijay stated that he only endorsed a gaming app, which he described as both legal and government-recognised. "My endorsement was for the gaming app A23 - there is no connection between a gaming app and a betting app whatsoever. Gaming apps are legal in several states. They are registered, have GST, taxes, and necessary approvals," the actor said.
He added that the app was not accessible in Telangana due to location restrictions, elaborating, "Legal apps will have a geolocation lock. If you try to open in Telangana, you get a message that it is not allowed in this area. The governments and the courts decide what is right and what is wrong."
The actor also said that he has submitted relevant financial documents, including bank transaction records and his agreement with the app's parent company.
Vijay is among the 29 public figures - including actors Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, Nidhi Agarwal, Pranitha Subhash, Lakshmi Manchu, and Ananya Nagella - booked by the ED for allegedly promoting illegal betting apps in a violation of the Public Gambling Act, 1867.
Prakash was questioned by the agency for five hours on July 30, where he told ED officials that his conscience did not allow him to promote betting platforms. He had said, "I did only one advertisement for a gaming app, but later realised that I should not have done it."htc...
