India, Aug. 14 -- Luigi Mangione is not facing the death penalty in the federal case over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson because a federal judge dismissed the murder charge that allowed prosecutors to seek capital punishment. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett ruled in January that the federal murder charge could not legally stand alongside the stalking charges against Mangione. The ruling removed the death penalty from his federal case. Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges on Friday and admitted that he shot Thompson in Manhattan on December 4, 2024. He can still face life in prison, while a separate New York state murder case remains pending.
