US Congress clears Russia sanctions bill, hands Trump new tariff powers: What it means for India
India, Sept. 17 -- The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 by 262-159 votes, sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature. The Senate had cleared the bill 86-11 in August.
The legislation is named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally who spearheaded it over more than a year before his sudden death in July.
It gives Trump explicit congressional authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from the five largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas - currently China, India, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
