New Delhi, July 16 -- India's headline unemployment rate was 5.5% in June, according to the monthly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Wednesday. The rate was 5% in rural areas and 6.6% in urban areas. While the headline unemployment rate in June was the same as in May, it was 10 basis points -one basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point - less than in June 2025. Labour market indicators are usually compared for the same month across years to account for seasonality of some jobs, such as those in agriculture.
