India, Aug. 18 -- When US President Donald Trump called on Congress on Monday to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE, Act, he leaned on India as a data point.

India had 646 million voters in its last general election, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. Less than 1% cast postal ballots, and each carried a valid photo identity document. The point had been put to his administration, Trump said, by India's chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

"We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now!" the US President went on.

The endorsement was amplified within hours by Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, who had met Kumar in New Delhi on August 12 to discuss cooperation on election management and training of electio...
