India, Sept. 1 -- Apple CEO Tim Cook bid farewell to his role at the tech giant on Monday.

On his last day as CEO, Cook sent a heartfelt memo to Apple employees, thanking them for their support and praising them as an "extraordinary team." He also reflected on Apple's culture, paid tribute to Steve Jobs and welcomed incoming CEO John Ternus.

Cook has led Apple as CEO since 2011. He took over from Jobs just weeks before the Apple co-founder died of pancreatic cancer.

While Cook is stepping down as CEO, he is not leaving Apple. He said he will remain with the company in a new role.
