India, Sept. 9 -- Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar stirred controversy after he recently said at a film event for Original Monster that Hindi is his second language and described it as a national language while discussing his pan-India film. Now, he has apologised for the remark after receiving severe backlash online.

"I called Hindi the national language. It is one of the languages. Our language [Kannada] is always important to us. I don't know, I got confused with one of the Indian languages. I apologise, I did not know. Their language is Hindi; ours is Kannada. Their language is important to them. Similarly, our language is important to us," Shiva said on Wednesday during a media interaction at a promotional event for Original Monster.
