India, June 6 -- The 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, the Indian army mission to clear extremist elements from the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984, saw pro-Khalistan slogans being raised inside the premises of the holiest Sikh shrine on Saturday.

Protestors gathered in front of the Akal Takht, the Supreme temporal and spiritual seat in Sikhism, and also bore posters depicting Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale, the man who was said to be leading the Sikh extremists inside the premises in 1984.

June 6 is the death anniversary of Bhinderanwale, who was the head of the Damdami Taksal, an orthodox Sikh educational organisation and seminary founded by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, at the time of his death in 1984.
