New Delhi, Sept. 4 -- A genetically modified pig's kidney kept a 66-year-old man with end-stage kidney failure free of dialysis for a record nine months before he successfully received a human kidney, according to a study published in The Lancet.

This is the first time a porcine organ has served as a temporary "bridge" to human allotransplantation, offering hope for addressing the severe global shortage of donor organs.

The report, titled "Porcine kidney xenotransplantation as a bridge to allotransplantation: a first-in-human study," detailed the procedure performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
