AMRITSAR, Sept. 19 -- A 45-year-old Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was ambushed and shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants during his night patrol outside a grain market in Amritsar on Friday, police said. According to police, the incident happened around 12.30 am when the victim, ASI Harjit Singh, was fatally shot near gate number two of the the Bhagtanwala grain market. It was the third deadly attack on Punjab Police personnel this year, following the May murder of ASI Joga Singh in Amritsar and the February killings of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard constable Ashok Kumar at a border checkpost in Gurdaspur district.
