Panchkula, Aug. 23 -- Observing that sentencing is an important task in criminal cases and that punishment must be appropriate, adequate, just and proportionate to the nature and gravity of the offence, the Panchkula sessions court awarded rigorous life imprisonment to a 32-year-old Parvesh Chaurasia for the murder of a 60-year-old man in Chandimandir in June 2020.

Sessions judge Sanjay Sandhir, while dealing with the prosecution's plea for a deterrent sentence and the defence's request for leniency, observed that there was no "straight jacket formula" for sentencing an accused after conviction.
