Odisha on flood alert as heavy rain looms
Bhubaneswar, Aug. 17 -- Odisha is bracing for another potentially devastating flood on Monday as a fresh low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, with about 515,000 people in six districts already affected and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red warning for extremely heavy rain in Balasore, Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts.
Chief secretary Anu Garg reviewed the situation on Sunday and held discussions with collectors of affected districts to assess relief and rescue operations. Odisha has received 953 mm of rainfall between June 1 and August 16, about 27% above normal, she said.
