National Doughnut Day 2026: Where and how to get free, discounted doughnuts
India, June 5 -- For nearly 90 years, the first Friday of June has been commemorated each year with a singular dessert: donuts.
This holiday was initiated by The Salvation Army in 1938 to pay tribute to the organization's Donut Lassies and Donut Girls, women who journeyed to France during World War I to provide donuts and other refreshments to soldiers.
As stated by The Salvation Army, the Donut Lassies operated from temporary huts, offering soldiers emotional and spiritual support, vital supplies, and freshly made donuts. This quickly elevated the treat to a symbol of comfort and happiness.
