In a conversation with former England captain Kevin Pietersen on YouTube, the India batter sounded more like a man who has already made peace with the idea that careers end - and that ending them well can be a decision, not a defeat.

At 33, Rahul remains a key presence across formats, but his tine was revealing firm about not overstaying, reflective about family, and blunt about the one opponent has has repeatedly forced him to pause - his own body.
