India, Oct. 1 -- The Customs Department has imposed a penalty of Rs.89 crore on Kannada actress Ranya Rao in the gold smuggling case, holding her liable for violations related to the alleged smuggling of gold from Dubai to India.

The penalty was imposed through a 399-page adjudication order issued by Customs Joint Director Sandeep following the department's investigation into an alleged smuggling network involving Rao and three others. The four accused have been collectively penalised more than Rs.244 crore.

Rao was fined Rs.89 crore, while Tarun Konduru Raju was penalised Rs.49.51 crore, and Sahil Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain were each fined Rs.53.06 crore.
