Chandigarh, Sept. 24 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court has said that information accessed from a private society by a public authority under law can be sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. The high court dismissed a petition filed by Saraswati Kunj Cooperative Housing Building Society, Gurugram, challenging the directions of the Haryana State Information Commission to furnish information sought under RTI Act.
The bench of justice Kuldeep Tiwari upheld the commission's decision observing that information relating to private cooperative societies, to the extent accessible by a public authority under law, falls within the ambit of the RTI Act.
