Kanpur, March 25 -- The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has begun removing steel pipes used by students to dry clothes from hostel rooms, and installing spring-loaded devices in ceiling fans in a bid to prevent student suicides. According to an official, the pipes, are being removed from Hall 1, Hall 2 and Hall 3 - the older hostel buildings, which have nearly 1,500 rooms - an official said. The spring-loaded devices will be installed in every ceiling fan across all 14 hostels of the institute, he added. The measures come in the wake of nine student suicides at the institute in two years.
