MUMBAI, Feb. 11 -- The father of jailed activist Umar Khalid criticised the criminal justice system and questioned the denial of bail to his son, calling for statutory consequences against investigating officers who file what he described as "frivolous" and "senseless" prosecutions. He was speaking at 9th Shahid Azmi Memorial Lecture themed around the denial of bail to Khalid and co-accused Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case. The Supreme Court had observed that the two had played a central role in orchestrating the conspiracy that allegedly led to the riots.
