CABINET CLEARS Rs.20,804 CRORE RAIL EXPANSION ACROSS 9 STATES

NEW DELHI, Sept. 10 -- The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved eight multi-tracking railway projects worth Rs.20,804 crore across nine states, adding nearly 1,200 km to the Indian railways network and aiming to ease congestion on some of the country's busiest passenger and freight corridors. The projects will cover 31 districts and improve rail connectivity to nearly 6,900 villages. "The government estimates the projects will create additional freight-handling capacity of around 74 MT per annum," Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.P8
