India, April 26 -- Born in Tokyo in 1980, Mari Ito trained at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo. For the past 20 years, she has lived in Barcelona. Now in her mid-40s, Ito is part of a cohort of Japanese artists practising the traditional nihonga technique amid a highly experimental contemporary art scene marked by the likes of Yayoi Kusama and Yasumasa Morimura. Ito also experiments with a range of media, including photographic works in collaboration with Barcelona-based photographer Toni Mateu, murals, and soft sculpture installations. "I am always open to working with different materials, as long as they align with the concept I wish to express," Ito says.
