India, Aug. 20 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday said the term 'native' has colonial origins as it questioned its usage in CBSE's three-language policy introduced under the Centre's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Questioning the use of term 'native', Justice Joymalya Bagchi said the correct term should be 'indigenous' and that the framers of NEP 2020 should have been mindful about it.

The court also said that it would have to examine whether English as a language can be considered indigenous or non-indigenous in India.

"Whether English can be termed indigenous or non-indigenous, we have to see its constitutionality", Justice Bagchi further said.
