'For us, Ajit Pawar was Baramati,' say residents
Baramati, Jan. 29 -- The western Maharashtra town of 100,000 people plunged into shock and grief on Wednesday morning as news spread of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar's death in a plane crash as residents reflected on the deep bond many shared with the leader who dominated the region's public life for over three decades.
Shops stayed half-closed, tea stalls were deserted, and people gathered in small groups.
On roads leading into Baramati, posters and banners put up recently for the local body polls stood awkwardly against the mood of mourning.
"I have seen him here since my childhood," said Tukaram Shinde, an elderly farmer.
"For us, Ajit Pawar was Baramati."
