Goa, June 17 -- Veteran theatre artist and Padma Shri awardee Prasad Sawkar passed away on Wednesday afternoon at his residence in Tonca, Caranzalem. He was 98.

A towering figure in Indian theatre, Sawkar was widely admired for his immense contribution to the performing arts and his distinguished career spanning several decades. His passing marks the end of an era for the theatre fraternity and cultural community.

Family sources informed that the last rites of the celebrated artist will be held on Thursday at 10.30 a.m.

The demise of the Padma Shri awardee has evoked grief among artists, admirers, and members of the cultural fraternity, who have remembered him for his dedication to theatre and his enduring artistic legacy.
