Goa, Aug. 23 -- In a dramatic turn of events, Donald Fernandes, founder of Street Providence, attempted to hand over residents of his male shelter home to the police on Saturday, citing an acute financial crisis that has left the NGO struggling to sustain operations.
Fernandes had earlier issued a notice in July, warning that the shelter would shut down from August and that Goa Police would be asked to take charge of the residents. True to his word, he brought the inmates to the police station this weekend after announcing the facility's closure.
