Goa, July 10 -- The South Goa District Collector has constituted a special enforcement committee to clamp down on dhirio - the traditional but illegal bullfighting practice - drawing mixed reactions across the district. While animal rights advocates have hailed the move as long overdue, supporters of the sport have raised concerns about selective enforcement and the side-lining of Goan cultural traditions.

The committee was formed following directions issued by the court in response to writ and contempt petitions seeking a ban on dhirio. South Goa Collector and District Magistrate Egna Cleetus, IAS, emphasised the need for vigilance and swift intervention.
