India, Feb. 5 -- Chief Electrical Engineer (CEC) Stephan on Wednesday said that smart metering is the need of the hour as it will enable consumers to monitor their day-to-day electricity consumption and use power more efficiently.

Speaking during a public hearing of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), Stephan said smart meters would bring greater transparency and awareness among consumers about their power usage patterns.

"Smart meters will improve power consumption. People will be able to know their day-to-day usage. This will help consumers regulate and manage their electricity consumption better," he said.
