Goa, Oct. 5 -- On October 4, the crew of Air India's Amritsar-Birmingham flight reported that the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) on their Boeing 787 deployed during the final approach. The back-up device is programmed to activate in severe emergencies such as engine or hydraulic failure.

Air India confirmed that all systems were functioning normally and the plane landed safely at Birmingham. As a precaution, however, the aircraft has been grounded and its return leg to Delhi cancelled. Passengers are being offered alternate travel plans.

The airline has not revealed the number of passengers aboard AI117.
