Goa, June 27 -- The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has come under fire after it abruptly closed a key foot overbridge by welding shut the gates at both ends, sparking widespread criticism from public representatives and residents.

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar slammed the MPA's action, calling it "blatant dadagiri" and warning the authority against testing people's patience. "This is high-handed behavior. The footbridge must be reopened immediately," Salkar demanded.

The closure, which follows the recent installation of gates at the Baina ramps, has disrupted pedestrian access ahead of the Saptah festival, when thousands use the bridge to reach the city and the Vailankanni Chapel.
