Goa, Oct. 22 -- Schools in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts have been declared closed today following heavy overnight rainfall across the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu over the next five days, raising concerns over continued wet weather.

The intensity of the downpour was evident from rainfall recorded across Chennai. Meenambakkam received 120.3 mm of rain in the 21 hours leading up to 5.30 am today, while Nungambakkam recorded 107.2 mm during the same period.

The persistent rainfall prompted authorities to announce a holiday for schools in the four districts as the region braces for further rain.
