Goa Pushes for GI Tag for Traditional 'Saaran' Broom
Goa, Oct. 13 -- Goa has proposed granting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to its traditional coconut-leaf broom, locally known as 'Saaran'. Also referred to regionally as Mugdyachi Saaran, Vhiranche Saaran, or Zhaadu, this item is handcrafted entirely from natural midribs of coconut palm leaves.
Each durable broom contains roughly 100 to 120 midribs, lasting several months in Goan households for indoor and outdoor sweeping. State officials emphasize that obtaining GI status will safeguard this traditional craft's identity while showcasing its deep connections to Goa's heritage, agrarian practices, and local culture.
