Goa, Oct. 23 -- The Goa High Court has dismissed a petition filed by an accused in the Cansaulim gang rape case, who had sought to declare his arrest as a violation of fundamental rights, claiming he was not informed of the grounds for his arrest.

The court observed that at the nascent stage of an investigation, informing an accused of the limited purpose and grounds of arrest strikes a necessary balance between constitutional safeguards, the State's right to conduct an impartial investigation, and-most critically-the rights of the victim in a heinous crime.
