Goa, Aug. 7 -- Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has raised alarm in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the unlawful collection of sopo (market fees) from small vendors by unauthorised bouncers and goons in local markets. Speaking during Zero Hour, Sardesai said the extortion has intensified ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, especially targeting traders selling Matoli items and Chinese roses-essentials for the festival.

Highlighting the plight of small-scale vendors, Sardesai urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to exempt these sellers from paying sopo during the festive season. "Local traders who preserve Goan tradition and depend on this income should not be harassed or extorted," he stressed.
