Goa, Aug. 26 -- Legendary country singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer, her representatives confirmed to PEOPLE on August 25.

Parton died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, where she had been admitted four days earlier. The type of cancer was not disclosed. Her family said she was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death.

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced the news in an Instagram video, describing Parton as a beloved aunt, sister and grandmother. He said the singer had asked him years ago to make the announcement when the time came.
