Goa, July 18 -- A 65-year-old Congress worker died after an iron rod from a temporary tent structure fell on him during preparations for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's scheduled event at the Bannu School grounds in Dehradun, party leaders said.

According to Congress state vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana, the deceased, Amar Mehta, was supervising arrangements beneath the tent on Thursday evening when an iron rod from the structure suddenly came loose and struck him on the head, causing critical injuries.

Mehta was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
