India, Feb. 9 -- Controversy erupted in Bicholim after Sambhajirao Bhide made a statement claiming that India's national flag is not the tricolour but the saffron flag, during the inauguration of the Hindvi Swarajya Pillar.
The event was held at Shri Kulneshwar Temple and Bhagwan Nityanand Math and witnessed large public participation. Bhide's remarks quickly drew criticism, with many terming them insensitive and contrary to the Constitution, which recognises the tricolour as the country's official national flag.
Several voices across political and social circles condemned the statement, asserting that the tricolour symbolises India's unity, diversity and constitutional values.
