Goa, April 12 -- Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, one of India's most prolific playback artists, passed away at 92 after battling cardiac and respiratory issues. Admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday in critical condition, she was rushed to the ICU that night. Her son Anand confirmed the news Sunday afternoon; last rites are set for Monday.

Born in 1933 into the musical Mangeshkar family, Asha began singing at age 9, debuting in a 1943 film. By the 1950s, she dominated Bollywood, initially typecast in cabaret numbers but later excelling in ghazals like "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" from Umrao Jaan, earning a National Award.
