Sri Lanka, June 9 -- Sri Lanka's proposed Chartered Institute of Media Professionals deserves serious attention, but not automatic celebration. In principle, any effort to strengthen professional standards, improve training, and recognize ethical journalism sounds timely and even overdue. Yet the value of such a body depends entirely on the political and institutional environment in which it is created.

In Sri Lanka today, that environment remains marked by fragile media freedom, strong state influence, economic insecurity, and uneven ethical practice. A bill can establish a framework for professionalism, but it cannot by itself create independence, public trust, or editorial courage.
