India, Aug. 14 -- Ellen Greene is returning to the world of Little Shop of Horrors as Frank Oz's 1986 film marks its 40th anniversary, reflecting on the role of Audrey that became the defining performance of her career.
Finding Audrey
Greene, now 75, recalled how Audrey's distinctive breathy, squeaky and slightly lispy voice emerged spontaneously during her audition. She had not deliberately created the unusual vocal style, but it immediately became central to the character.
Greene first played Audrey in the 1982 off-Broadway production before reprising the role for Oz's film opposite Rick Moranis. She later returned to the character in 2015 for three sold-out performances, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing Seymour.
