India, July 28 -- Acclaimed American artist Betye Saar, whose groundbreaking works reshaped conversations around Black identity, history and cultural memory, has died at the age of 99 in Los Angeles, just days before her 100th birthday.
Pioneer of the Black Art Movement
A leading figure of the Black Art Movement that emerged during the 1960s, Saar became internationally known for her assemblage art, creating sculptures from found objects to explore race, spirituality and social justice. Her family confirmed her death on Monday. Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Saar transformed everyday items and racially charged memorabilia into powerful artistic statements that challenged stereotypes and celebrated Black resilience.
