India, Aug. 29 -- Torrential rain over 14 hours has caused the Mandakini river to overflow and flood the pilgrimage town of Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district, breaking a 23-year record as waters rise 8-9 metres above the danger mark.

Ramghat is completely submerged, shops along the ghat are inundated, and NDRF-SDRF teams are conducting rescue operations as officials urge residents to stay away from the river.
