30x30 target's race to protect nature slowed by extractive industry
India, Oct. 8 -- The world is not on track to meet the ambitious Target 3, popularly known as the 30x30 target. The target is part of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) set up in 2022 under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and mandates that 30 per cent of the land and water would be protected by 2030 to ensure that biodiversity is protected.
Only a little more than 3 years remain to the deadline but member countries have committed barely 23 per cent of the land and water.
