India, July 21 -- The Indian rupee weakened by 6 paise to 96.42 against the US dollar in early trade on July 21, pressured by heightened geopolitical tensions that weighed on most Asian currencies.

According to forex traders, rising crude oil prices amid renewed geopolitical uncertainty and increased demand for the US dollar as a safe-haven asset put pressure on the domestic currency. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 96.41 and slipped to 96.42, down 6 paise from its previous close.
