India, July 23 -- The Indian rupee appreciated 5 paise to 96.48 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, supported by possible intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and a weaker US dollar.

However, gains remained limited as elevated geopolitical tensions in West Asia kept crude oil prices under pressure, while continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows and weak sentiment in domestic equity markets weighed on the local currency. The rupee opened at 96.53 before strengthening to 96.48, compared with its previous close.
