India, Aug. 18 -- The rupee strengthened by 20 paise to 87.39 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, supported by firm domestic equities. However, forex traders noted that uncertainty surrounding the trade tariff issue between India and the US could keep investors cautious.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 87.46 per dollar and later appreciated to 87.39, marking a 20 paise gain from its previous close.
